Tradition marks Igbo Union 2nd anniversary

Budapest, Hungary - The Igbo Union Hungary celebrated its end of the year party on December 3 in a grand traditional together which started with the breaking of Kola-nut. Although the ritual was performed in Igbo language, African News Hungary was carried along with the help of an interpreter.

Malawi to review anti-gay law

Malawi has announced that it will review a list of legislation, including a ban on homosexual acts. "In view of the sentiments from the general public and in response to public opinion regarding certain laws, the government wishes to announce to the Malawi nation that it is submitting the relevant laws and provisions of laws to the Law Commission for review." Justice Minister Ephraim Chiume said in a statement.

The Federal Government on Wednesday restated its determination to pass a law banning same-sex marriage and open display of affection by gays within its territory.

Zambia received no sufficient information from Amnesty International to arrest former US President George W. Bush, the country's president Michael Sata said. The former US president was visiting Zambia this weekend to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer.

If necessary steps are not taken, a disagreement over visa refusal to some South Africans in Johannesburg during the week may develop into a major diplomatic row between Nigeria and South Africa. According to a South African newspaper, Saturday Star, some members of a local church had accused the Nigerian Consulate staff of demanding bribes from them before they could be granted visa to the country.

Kwame Nkrumah (21 September 1909 – 27 April 1972) was the first President of the first free nation in Africa, and a founding father of the Pan-Africanist movement. His dream was to turn Ghana into a modern industrial utopia – a society shaped by the power of science that would serve as a model for the rest of the African continent. At the heart of his plan was the Volta Dam, a hydroelectric power plant that would provide Ghana with all the cheap power that it would need to initiate an industrial revolution.

Brazil legend Socrates dies aged 57

Brazil's 1982 World Cup captain Socrates, the 'Golden Heel' renowned as one of the great playmakers of his generation, died in hospital on Sunday of septic shock at the age of 57. A smoker and drinker even in his playing days, Socrates had been on a life support system in Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Israeli Hospital since Thursday when he was admitted suffering from food poisoning.

Arrest Bush during Africa trip

Amnesty International called on Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia on Thursday to arrest former U.S. President George W. Bush for human rights violations when he visits Africa this month. As president from 2001 to 2009, Bush authorized the use of water boarding and other interrogation techniques that Amnesty and other human rights groups consider torture.
