Essien Igbokwe passes on @ 50


LEADING female musician, Christy Essien-Igbokwe,  (a.k.a.  Lady of Songs) passed on today (Thursday 30 June) at the age of 51.


Sources close to the family confirmed that the musician mostly known for her hit song Seun rere died after a brief illness.

Her son, Kaka, who is also a musician, confirmed the death.

The late musician was the first female president of the Performing Musicians’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN). Her last major outing was at the grand finale of Nigerian Idol in March.

She became Nigerian lady of songs, after clinching the Africa Music Mother Award in 1984. Her other achievements and honour include International Special Achievement Award Mexico in 1983; World Song Festival Award, Los Angeles; Queen of Music International Award, presented to her by the Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners, Lagos, in 1996.

Born on November 11, 1960, the songbird and actress, was the chairman and managing director of Soul Train Entertainment Limited.
