South Africa to issue Nelson Mandela banknotes

The South African government has announced plans to issue a new set of banknotes displaying the image of former President Nelson Mandela.

South African President Jacob Zuma said the banknotes would serve as a humble gesture to convey the people’s deep gratitude to the former president.

During a speech at the central bank in Pretoria, President Zuma described Mandela’s release  as the beginning of a new era of hope.

“With this humble gesture, we are expressing our deep gratitude as the South African people, to a life spent in service of the people of this country and in the cause of humanity worldwide,” he said.
After spending 27 years in prison, Mandela was released on 11 February 1990 and he became the first black president in 1994.
