Okocha while speaking in Lagos stated that he received a lot of motivation to continue but preferred to quit the stage when the ovation was loudest.
"Those I left that position for, up till now, have not lived up to expectations; that does not mean blowing my trumpet but that is the truth. Sometimes, I do think that may be I should have managed to stay for another two years or so before I hand over to another person, but you don't have to be selfish in whatever you are doing.
"Again, I don't want to wait until they stop inviting me to the Super Eagles. It was the right time for me to leave. Because of the situation at times, I do think of returning to the national team," said the former Bolton Wanderers skipper.
Okocha, after being offered $550,000 to play in the proposed Indian Premier League by one of the clubs, stated that returning to football after a long lay off will be hellish.
"The Indian deal is true because I have got an offer to come and promote their league but I don't know how I am going to do it. Coming out of retirement after four years is not going to be easy but I don't think the organisers of the league are expecting much from me on the pitch," the former Fenerbahce of Turkey player said.
Meanwhile, the proposed Indian Premier League scheduled to begin on March 24 according to reports has been put on hold.
