PRESS RELEASE

Ambassador meets with the Nigerian community leaders in Hungary

Amb Onuoha
The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Hungary, H.E. Chief Eddy Onuoha held his median meeting with leaders of the Nigerian Community in Budapest on 18th August, 2012.

In his opening remarks the Ambassador stated that the Embassy of Nigeria was poised to protect and defend the interests of Nigerians resident in Hungary within the limits of both local and international laws.

In this regard, he called upon Nigerians resident in Hungary to be law abiding, observe all local terms and shone all vices such as drug related offences and finally urged them to be good Ambassadors of Nigeria in Hungary.

Regarding deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, occasioned by the Boko Haram’s insurgency in some parts of the country, Ambassador Onuoha assured the Nigerian Community leaders that the Federal Government of Nigeria was on top of the situation. He reiterated the Government’s efforts in dealing with the situation which include its readiness to dialogue with the sect.

Turning to the epileptic power supply in Nigeria, Ambassador Onuoha stated that the Government of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was foisted to tackle the problem head on.  In this regard, he further revealed that there has been significant improvement in the power supply nationwide.

Speaking on Consular issues, His Excellency expressed dismay over the closure of Hungarian Embassy in Nigeria which was causing an unprecedented hardship on Nigerians seeking Hungarian Schengen visas. He informed the gathering that the Mission has already made a strong appeal to the Hungarian Foreign Office here in Budapest and promised to take the case further with the President.

To assuage the problem the Ambassador reiterated his determination to prod the Hungarian Authorities to reconsider their action of closing their Mission in Nigeria. In a brighter note, His Excellency further informed that the efforts had started yielding positive results as the Hungarian Authorities had appointed one of its top diplomatic officers, Zsolt Maris as Ambassador to Nigeria with residence in Budapest.

On the issue of Nigerians in prison custody, the Ambassador expressed concern that a substantial number of Nigerian nationals were in detention or arrested or imprisoned on narcotic drugs related offences. To stem the tide, Ambassador Onuoha implored the Nigerian Community Leaders to monitor the movements of Nigerians in Hungary as well as to counsel them on the dangers that drugs peddling portend.

He therefore advised that every Nigerian resident in Hungary should endeavour to register with the Embassy with a view to having a comprehensive details and databank of Nigerian citizens in Hungary and promised to meet with the leaders periodically.

On the other part, the Nigerian Community Leaders pledged their support to Ambassador Onuoha and members of his staff. Furthermore, he assured that all necessary steps would be taken to dissuade Nigerians from illegal acts while in Hungary.

Love the article on Gaddafi
We must rise above tribalism & divide & rule of the colonialist who stole & looted our treasure & planted their puppets to lord it over us..they alone can decide on whosoever is performing & the one that is corrupt..but the most corrupt nations are the western countries that plunder the resources of other nations & make them poorer & aid the rulers to steal & keep such ill gotten wealth in their country..yemen,syria etc have killed more than gadhafi but its not A̷̷̴ good investment for the west(this is laughable)because oil is not in these countries..when obasanjo annihilated the odi people in rivers state, they looked away because its in their favour & interest..one day! Hello from
Johannesburg
I was amazed to find a website for Africans in Hungary.
Looks like you have quite a community there. Here in SA we have some three million Zimbabweans living in exile and not much sign of going home ... but in Hungary??? Hope to meet you on one of my trips to Europe; was in Steirmark Austria near the Hungarian border earlier this month. Every good wish for 2011. Geoff in Jo'burg

I'm impressed by
ANH work but...
Interesting interview...
I think from what have been said, the Nigerian embassy here seem to be more concern about its nationals than we are for ourselves. Our complete disregard for the laws of Hungary isn't going to help Nigeria's image or going to promote what the Embassy is trying to showcase. So if the journalists could zoom-in more focus on Nigerians living, working and studying here in Hungary than scrutinizing the embassy and its every move, i think it would be of tremendous help to the embassy serving its nationals better and create more awareness about where we live . Taking the issues of illicit drugs and forged documents as typical examples.. there are so many cases of Nigerians been involved. But i am yet to read of it in e.news. So i think if only you and your journalists could write more about it and follow up on the stories i think it will make our nationals more aware of what to expect. I wouldn't say i am not impressed with your work but you need to be more of a two way street rather than a one way street . Keep up the good work... Sylvia
