September 11 memorials unveiled in Hungary
This week on 9/11, Ambassador Kounalakis, American embassy employees and
family members donated blood in an event organized by the Hungarian Red Cross.
Also firefighters in Hatvan and Kiskunfélegyháza unveiled memorials to
firefighters and other victims of the U.S.
September 11 attacks that incorporated steel from the World Trade
Center towers.
In her remarks Ambassador Kounalakis stressed that the United States is grateful to the citizens of
Hatvan and Hungary
for keeping the memory of 9/11 alive and for showing solidarity and compassion
with the American people.
Ambassador Kounalakis, in Hatvan together with Hatvan Mayor Zsolt Szabó and
Brigadier General Zoltán Góra, unveiled a memorial sculpted by Attila Bobály
that symbolized emergence from tragedy and new hope.
Cultural Attaché Dmitri Tarakhovsky took part in a commemoration in Kiskunfélegyháza and Public Affairs Officer, Karyn Posner-Mullen, shared her memories of being in New York 11 years ago at the opening of a photo exhibit at the Firefighters’ Museum in Eger, where at 2:46, the local time of the attack, a group of firefighters stood at attention in uniform by a fire truck behind and saluted while a siren wailed.
