Remembrance
Iványi Tibor 1928-2009 |
Relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers gathered at John Wesley Theology College on Wednesday 17 November in remembrance of Iványi Tibor who died last year at the age of 81. Series of events including lectures, conferences and a visit to his tomb were observed in his honour.
Before he passed on, Iványi was the first president of Methodist Church in Budapest and also the director of John Wesley Theology College situated at Dánko utca 11 where some African students enjoy scholarship programmes.
He is said to be in passionate support of immigrants’ integration into the Hungarian society in the early 90’s at a time some disgruntled elements were attacking foreigners. Some Africans who came in contact with Iványi during his life described him as a pillar behind integration.
“He is as religious as he is an activist, a defender of human rights,” said Jibril Deen, the president and founder of Mahatma Gandhi Human Rights Movement. “He was the pillar behind the formation in 1994 of African Stars Football Club which is presently doing well in Budapest Division IV”.
Iványi left behind a legacy of educating people and taking care of homeless people. The Charity Society (Oltalam karitatíve Egyesület) situated in the same vicinity as the college where homeless are being taking care of is an example of his generosity to humanity.
