foreigners get Nigerian citizenship

The
Federal Government has conferred Nigerian citizenship on 92 expatriates. Certificates
of naturalization and registration were presented to them by the minister of labor
and productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu who is overseeing the Ministry of Interior.
45
of them are Lebanese and 38 others who are Indians, Canadians, Philippines, Pakistanis,
Irish, and Chinese, as well as Egyptians and Nigerians.
In
his address, Chief Wogu noted with the satisfaction that the event was coming
shortly after a successful general election which was an indication that
democracy has taken root in Nigeria.
He
said the certificates would support their applications for e- passports to
proof that they have become Nigerian citizens.
The
minister asked the newly naturalized Nigerians to make positive contributions
to the advancement, progress, and well-being of the different communities where
they reside.
Mrs
Caroline Enyen responded on behalf of the recipients of the new Nigerian
citizenship saying they are proud and happy to be Nigerians.
The
director of citizenship in the Federal Ministry of Interior, Mr Adetayo Sode,
handed over to the foreigners their certificates of citizenship while the legal
adviser in the Ministry, Mrs Shade Adewale administered on them the oath of
citizenship.
The
Ministry did not however give the number of applications that were turned down.
