Recently the Nigerian accent was rated one of the sexiest (5th) accent in the world alongside the Italian accent (1st), the French accent (2nd), the Spanish accent (3rd) and the Irish accent which was ranked 6th by the world’s largest new network the Cable Network News (CNN).
The researcher (Jordan Burchette) in his own words noted that the accents of these icons were “dignified, with just a hint of wilful naiveté, the rich “OH’s” and “EH’s” of the Naija bends the English language without breaking it, arousing tremor in places other languages cant reach”.
While some Nigerians may have been surprised or even not have believed this it is quite obvious and eminent that there is no limit to the amount of gifts within us (Nigerians) that makes us stand out amongst other nations. Gifts that sometimes we don’t even pay attention to and while some of us are busy not believing or criticizing the few who make use of their gifts or talents, others are improving themselves in every way possible that they can.
Omotola Jalade and King Sunny Ade are notable icons and celebrities and despite the fact that they constantly have to be eloquent as a result of their jobs and what they do, they obviously work very hard to get better and now even in ways that we didn’t even expect, their hard work has paid off not only to them but the image of the Nation and Nigerians in general.
Every Nigerian ought to take a cue from these celebrities and work on every aspects of our being “the way we walk, the way we talk, look, our choice of words and how we present them, how we do things and how we present ourselves to the outside world” because we cannot always tell in what way and what aspect we’d have to stand out and be recognized, not only for ourselves but also for the people around us.
